Jancis made a handful of albums in the 70's and all are sought after. This is her 1979 album and she is backed by an electric folk band and covers a range of material - folk, pop, country. This new electric approach really suits her and the material, particularly the self composed songs.

Very scarce album from this Welsh trio ( two girls, one man) performing a mix of folk and pop tunes. It's a gentle folk record and the group are backed by a full electricband. Lovely stuff!

It's a Folk-Heritage production and has a typical F.H. album cover.

How rare? The only copy we've ever seen!

Welsh folk issued on the tiny, and very collectable, Gwerin label in 1976. The band have 3 female vocalists singing in Welsh and they even tackle a Meic Stevens song.

Traditional Irish folk recorded in Quebec in 1977 but the band all have Irish names and I would guess they are indeed Irish. Plenty of fiddles, whistles, bodhran along with flute and viola.

 One of the rarest on the label.

Gorgeous melodic folk from this 3-piece band. Beautiful (Kate Bush-like vocals) from Gill Darbey and some lovely haunting violin too.

Avada was a very obscure Cheltenham based label and everything on it is worth a listen.

One of the very few albums issued in the Folk Mill series and very collectable.

The Peelers were a 3 piece Irish folk band playing mainly traditional material on this 1972 album. A real interesting outing that moves from traditional to modern and the production is excellent. Way better than its' reputation.

A stalwart of the Bolton folk scene Pat (who's a female) made this 1977 album of traditional material with the aid of the ubiquitous Paul Downes and Phil Beer.

It's a gem and has become very elusive.

This is one of the most difficult to find on the label.

Six-piece religious folk group perform a musical sequence depicting the Easter story. It's from 1972 and very well executed.

The cover's almost home-made and very evocative.

Alan Green production from 1973 and only very rarely seen. Wild Oats were a 4 piece with a female vocalist. They play a mix of folk and country tunes and even cover Dylan's Tom Thumb Blues. I once saw another album by them on Folk Heritage but I would guess that this is rarer.

Rare 1975 album form this Scottish folkie. She accompanies herself on guitar and tackles songs by Joni Mitchell and Donovan and also her own tunes. Her version of "I Once Loved a Lad" is something special.

This is the sort of album that gave Westwood some credibility.

Alan Green production from 1976. Mabel Joy were a 4-piece band with Gillian Finnie on vocals and they cover songs by Tom Paxton, Gordon Lightfoot, Shel Silverstein and others. A very difficult album to find.

Splendid trad folk in a modern style issued in 1985 on this obscure label. This 4 piece band quickly established a reputation for great interpretations of classic material. Some self composed tunes too.

The Davylamp folk club was in Washington in the North East of England and this private pressing from 1974 is a terrific legacy of the place. The artists featured are Bob Fox, Barrie Dipper, Frank O'Neill, Terri & Eric Freeman and Don Day.

Wonderful album from this Bristol duo - Dee Jarlett and Martin Hanstead. It was issued in 1987 and is a mix of traditional and self composed material. Don't be put off by the date, this is terrific folk with lovely female vocals. The back cover has been autographed too.

Dutch Issue - Negram NK 211

So much wonderful folk music has come out of the Netherlands and this 1976 album by this 5-piece band is right up there. Traditional material played with enthusiasm and wit.

Folk in the broadest sense. Vikki has an absolutley gorgeous voice and the arrangements of traditional material are just fabulous. Gordon Giltrap helps with production and plays some guitar but it's Vikki who's the star.

Very obscure album issued in 1972 on Reflection. It's a concept piece on the story of Jesus and features a full band  and 3 vocalists. This copy has the elusive lyric insert.

Wonderful 1974 album of mainly traditional material by this 7-piece band who were based in Italy.  Mireille Ben is on vocals and the band also includes English folkie Trevor Crozier (maybe he was on his hols!) and the usual peerless Italian musicianship.

Original mono copy of this seminal album. A Joe Boyd production from 1966 this isn't as far-out as what came later but it was massively influential and there are plenty of signs of the future developments. It's a pity Clive Palmer missed out on the success!

Third album from this fabulous band. Wonderful songs written by Keith Donnelly and sung beautifully by Gill Darbey and the guys. I can't understand why they weren't huge. This copy has the insert and the back cover is autographed.lovely cover too.

Scarce album by this Irish vocalist/harpist. The material is traditional Irish folk with partly acoustic and partly electric backing. Deirdre has a very pure voice and this comes with a recommendation from Josef Locke himself. 

Ceirnini Claddagh  - CCF14

Not folk in the purest sense but it's gorgeous whatever you call it. Jane is Irish and has a beautiful voice. Here she backed by a host of musicians on a mix of originals and covers.

If you like the Vikki Clayton albums then you will swoon over this stuff.

Private pressing from 1974 by this large folk band. The material has a religious flavour but not overly so. Some of the tracks are a bit too jaunty for me but there are some lovely poignant songs in there too with nice femal vocals.

Another of the stunningly rare Folk Heritage albums. This is from 1974 and is an Alan Green production. Rhona sings and backs herself with guitar on a mix of trad and contemporary folk material.

Another one of these tiny labels with a connection to Folk Heritage and, indeed, this album was engineered by Alan Green. It was issued in 1975 and Shakespear were a 2 piece, Pete Shakespear and Michael Tame, who played a mix of folk, pop and country. It is, of course, horribly rare.

There are private pressings and then there is something like this, almost home made. Recorded in the 70's at Trent Polytechnic and in Liverpool on what can only be described as primitive equipment, this is self composed stuff in a folk troubadour vein and is at least "interesting". Maybe someone can buy up the rights and get it out on CD and Dave can pick up a few royalties.

1982 album from the Irish folk singer. This is great stuff, a mix of self composed and traditional material. Great voice, great musicians and great arrangements.

Private pressing from 1967 of a folk-session recorded at a Manchester folk club in January of 1967. These privates are very scarce and often feature material which is otherwise unavailable. The artists here are - Pennine Folk, Harry Ogden, Mary & Sheila, Taverners, Lyn Taylor, Ken Wilson. Some of these went on to record albums of their own which are equally scarce. Such is the nature of folk collecting!

The first and most important Steeleye album and quite possibly their best. The line has Tim Hart, Maddy Prior and Ashley Hutchings, of course, but for this one album they are joined by Gay & Terry Woods who had talent to burn. This line-up exploded after this album, a great pity, but all of them went on to make great music and great albums. This copy has the elusive insert.

Trad folk from a male 3-piece issued on a very obscure Bristol label. Tracks include Foggy Dew, Peggy Gordon, Jug Of Punch plus a few Tom Paxton covers.

The cover has been autographed by all three.

1976 issue on a very obscure label indeed. Isca Fayre are a 4-piece and tackle traditional material such as Corduroy, Jack Orion and Come To My Window.

This can only have sold in tiny quantities and only a handful can have survived into this century. The cover is fully autographed.

Triban were a 3 piece (one man, two women) from Wales playing a nice mix of folk, pop and country. This 1978 outing is pleasant enough and includes a nice version of After the Goldrush.

Folk Heritage - FHR 052

This 1973 album is one of the most difficult Folk Heritage issues to find. Rod is backed by a full band on a mix of self composed and contemporary folk material.

It's an Alan Green production in a nice "man & dog" sleeve.

A legendary group from Newfoundland who play traditional material witha verve that few other bands can match. This may have been issued as recently as 1980 but demand far outstrips supply.

Deroy studios were based in Carnforth, Lancashire and enabled all kinds of people to record and walk away with a finished disc. Some were just vanity projects and some were serious attempts to get a recording contract. There is a lot of crap on the label (as we have found to our cost) but also a few gems.

This Liverpool folk outfit did in fact get a contract with Decca on the strength of this disc. They play mainly traditional stuff - Leaving Of Liverpool, Copper Kettle, Seth Davey - but it's easy to see why they were signed up.

The rarest of Dave's albums and the most sought after. Dave is helped out by Martin Carthy, Trevor Crozier and Maddy Prior which explains why it's so collectable but the material must be irresistable to train enthusiasts!

Lovely 1978 album from this Kentish duo - Doug and Sue Hudson - who are supported by Fiddlers Dram on this collection of traditional songs.

The album was produced by Joe Stead, engineered by Alan Green and has a beautiful gatefold sleeve.

Now this is rare! It's the 1960 issue put out by Doug Dobell and includes notes on the songs by him. The material is drawn from the EFDSS and is described as "earthy" but seems a little tame now. Great period piece in a suitably saucy cover.

1975 album on the immensely collectable Deroy label.It's one of those large groups formed at a church (in Preston) and they cover a mix of folk and religious material. Lots of nice female vocals - pleasant and, like all Deroy recordings, rare.

This particular Stoneground were a male duo singing and playing their own compositions on this rare 1979 album. They are both multi instrumentalists and are accompanied by a flute & bass players. The wonderful Heather Whittaker provides backing vocals.

Shirley Collins is now rightly considered to be the finest English folk singer and this rare Deram album confirms it. It is a collection which includes tracks from the albums she made with Davy Graham and various Fairports.

Toni Arthur is better known as a children's TV presenter than a folk singer but here on this rare and great album she proves that folk is her true calling. She and Dave are supported by Kevin Burke & Nic Jones on this 1970 album produced by Bill Leader. A lovely, spooky trip!

Original copy of this rarest of the Topic collections which features A.L.Lloyd, Frankie Armstrong, Alf Edwards, Dave Swarbrick and, most importantly, four tracks by the peerless Anne Briggs.

The material is traditional erotic songs and is essential for any serous folk collector.

This stuff sounds very dated to my English ears but there's no denying the mans' influence on Bob Dylan and thus on pretty well everything that's happened in popular music since 1963. This copy comes with the elusive booklet containing lyrics and biography. An important historical collection.

This religious folk outfit continue to gather admirers and this album is the reason why. It's just fabulous stuff - great playing and great songs that just leave you wanting more. Not a bad track on it and the best tracks are close to the peak of acid-folk. This is the "white" cover, as opposed to the "brown"cover and features a slightly different mix to the "brown" version. It doesn't make any difference - both versions are great!

Hopelessly obscure 1983 album by this talented duo. There are 2 covers of Richard Thompson songs and the rest are composed by Vo Fletcher. They are backed by a terrific array of musicians including Andrew Cronshaw and Ric Sanders.

1976 outing for the two musicians, Irv Mowrey and Malcolm Watson, who were responsible for the seriously scarce Subway album of acid folk issued in France. This is not so rare but the material is of an equally high standard.

A four piece band based in the Isle Of Man and performing mainly traditional folk material. This was recorded in Dublin (probably easier to reach than London!) and is truly a private pressing issued in 1976 on the band's own Kelly label. The performances are of a high standard and the material - Spanish Ladies, King Of the Sea, Jug Of Punch etc - suits them well.

This 1973 album of traditional folk by Gabriel & Marie Yacoub supported by Dan La Bras amongst others is actually the first Malicorne album by another name. And we all know what a great and important band they were.

Now here's a goodie. A 1970's album of traditional material by Doug & Sue Hudson (Tundra) on which they are supported by Fiddlers Dram and the Oyster Ceilidh Band amongst others. Engineered by Joe Stead too so quality is guaranteed.

Yes, they really are a family! A five-piece with Anne on vocals and a lovely musical mix of guitars, viola, sitar, mandolin, bouzouki etc on traditional and self composed material. Produced by Donal Lunny who also contributes some guitar.

A real gem and exceedingly rare.

Another of these horribly obscure Sain pressings from Wales. This is undated but is almost certainly a 70's pressing and it comes with the elusive booklet.

Dafydd is a big noise in Welsh politics these days but here he is backed by a full band on some intense Welsh folk. 

The cover is a gem.

Private pressing from 1975. A five piece band from Birmingham who concentrate on traditional Irish music. Tracks include The Rights Of Man, Peggy Gordon, Four Green Fields. A lovely rustic/fantasy cover completes the package.
